The peace symbol was created by artist Gerald Holtom in 1958, when he drew a circle containing merged lines that were his interpretation of the positions used to transmit the letters "N" and "D" with flags, as was done to communicate from ship to ship. The "N" in his circle stood for nuclear and "D" represented disarmament. The symbol spread around the globe and became a plea for peace. You'll find the peace sign in all sorts of jewelry, but pendants of the symbol have always been a favorite.
