Fashion Week-Fall 2009

The country's favorite Wonder Woman, Mrs. Obama, didn't show for Wu, the 26-year-old who hit the big time when she wore his gown on Inauguration Night, and again on the cover of next month's Vogue mag. There was no First Lady, only ladylike clothes - very pretty tweed skirts for day, delicately beaded gowns for night.

Dresses with criss-crossed fabric, draping on the bias, dropped waists, drapey sleeves - the list goes on. The designer who stands for something is so much better, in our estimation, than the designer who tries everything. And Azria has been around long enough to know how far to go without alienating his girls with too, too much.

Nicole Miller has written a new page in her design history. The new Nicole is much more mod than the designer most women. Webs were interpreted literally in embroideries and a blown-up pattern was seen throughout the collection. Pin tucks, funnel necks and fabric folded in an origami fashion brought 3-D life to skirts, jackets and blouses.

It's no surprise that the palette was somber, fashion usually goes that way in tough financial times. Alexander Wang's fall collection could definitely have been a rock show with all the black, leather and skin-tight clothing gracing his catwalk. Wang believes all women should be wearing black leggings of either the short or long variety. And from that base he builds in black, period.

The super hot design duo behind Rag & Bone have mastered the art of sticking to what they do best: tailor, tailor, tailor. Who knew you could do so much with a limited color palette, blazers and some leather? Turns out, a lot. Especially when you throw kilts, tuxedo shirts and leather-paneled jersey leggings into the mix.The collection might have lacked in color (black, navy and gray are their go-tos), but there was no lack of lust-worthy items. Our favorite look? The black one-shoulder mini frock. Their trendy take on the LBD will boost your sexy status like no other.

There were some wish list items. Our favorite? The drool-worthy Abaete for Payless booties decorated with chain-link tassels. An absolute must-have come fall.
