Century Girl

It often starts with "the girl," as models are called. And this year she's a museum piece, as the subject of this spring's exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Artin NYC.

Opening Wednesday, "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion" will explore the influence of the young fashion stars from 1947 to 1997 as they became icons of their respective eras, both projecting and often inspiring the look of the moment. The exhibition is sponsored by Marc Jacobs, who co-hosts the Costume Institute gala tonight with Kate Moss, the reigning muse.

A look from Jacobs kicks off our story -- his spring 2009 show of plucky gypsy suffragettes providing inspiration for our turn-of-the-last-century fashion promenade in Brooklyn Heights.
