Steven Madden debuts women's fashion


Steven Madden Ltd. is venturing further into the women's realm. The footwear and accessories retailer is designing a women's fashion apparel line. “I'm very excited about creating trend-right ready-to-wear for the Steve Madden customer,” said Mr. Madden, who founded the brand 19 years ago and operates as chief creative officer for the company.
The line, described as having a bohemian flare, will hit better department stores in spring 2010, and will include trendy items such as pixie dresses, boyfriend jacket affixed with exposed zippers and hardware details.

Mr. Madden designed a short-lived dress collection three years ago, but this will be the first time the company takes on a licensing partner, L'Koral Industries.
Analysts say Steve Madden has been able to prosper because its consumers shop at all stores—from value-priced discounters, such as Target, to upscale department stores like Bergdorf Goodman, which sells Steve Madden's high-end shoes.
